Metafunctional Meaning in Academic Research Writing: A Systemic Functional Linguistic Study of Research Articles Published in Punjab Universities

Abstract

Academic research writing is a socially situated discourse through which scholars construct knowledge, negotiate authority, and organize information, yet Pakistani higher education, where scholars publish in English as an additional language under sustained pressure to publish, remains underexamined through an integrated metafunctional lens. This study analyses how Punjab university scholars realise ideational, interpersonal, and textual meaning in published research articles, grounded in Halliday and Matthiessen's Systemic Functional Linguistics, specifically the three-metafunction model. A qualitative, corpus-based textual analysis design was adopted within an interpretivist, social constructionist paradigm. Data were collected through documentary analysis of research articles downloaded from university repositories and journal websites, manually coded using a structured SFL coding sheet analysing transitivity, modality and Appraisal, and Theme-Rheme structure. The population comprised approximately 300 English-language research articles from five public-sector universities: the University of the Punjab, Government College University Lahore, Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, the University of Sargodha, and the University of Education Lahore. Purposive sampling selected 50 articles, ten per university, totalling 150,000 words. Findings showed material and relational processes dominating Results sections, mental and verbal processes rising in Discussion sections, boosters outweighing hedges, underused engagement markers, and predominant constant thematic progression, indicating partial alignment with international academic writing norms.
