Abstract

As new media platforms multiply the volume and variety of content journalists must process, core journalistic values — credibility, autonomy, accuracy and accountability — come under sustained pressure to keep pace. This study examined whether that pressure is best explained by the number of platforms journalists use or by the diversity of sources and content they draw on, testing platform diversity, source diversity and content diversity as separate predictors of journalistic values among Pakistani journalists. Using a positivist, quantitative, cross-sectional design, data were collected through an online questionnaire administered to journalists registered with a National Press Club in Pakistan (N = 300; complete-case N = 262 for inferential analyses). Pearson correlation and simple linear regression showed that platform-level new media diversity had only a weak, though statistically significant, positive relationship with journalistic values (r = .17, p = .006, r² = .029), whereas source diversity (r = .73, p < .001, r² = .529) and, especially, content diversity (r = .86, p < .001, r² = .741) were strong, highly significant predictors — the single largest effect observed in the parent study. The findings show that credibility comes under pressure primarily from the range of content journalists engage with, not from platform use itself, pointing to content verification — not platform restriction — as the more urgent safeguard for journalistic values in Pakistan.
