Integration and Utilization of Sustainable Project Management Practices for Improving Construction Industry Performance in Developing Economies: A Roadmap to Resource Efficiency and Sustainability

This study focuses on the impact of Sustainable Project Management (SPM) practices on the performance of the construction industry in a developing economy, focusing on resource efficiency and controlling for sustainability. The study will follow a quantitative approach, with a cross-sectional design, examining the correlation between sustainable planning, sustainability-oriented procurement, stakeholder involvement, sustainable risk management, resource efficiency, environmental performance, social performance, and project performance. Construction professionals and project records were sampled to gather information from them and replicate it by using multiple regression, correlation, reliability testing, and descriptive statistics. The results show that the sustainable practices are moderately to highly adopted from the projects sampled. The reliability of all of the constructs was satisfactory, and all the relationships between the sustainability variables and project performance were positive and significant. The top 3 predictors for overall project performance were resource efficiency, sustainable planning, and sustainable risk management. Additionally, the results indicate that sustainability will positively affect performance on cost, time, and quality. Drawing from these findings, a five-stage course of action is recommended for making sustainability an integral part of construction project planning, monitoring, and continuous improvement. The study's findings are that SPM is a viable system for enhancing construction achievements, decreasing waste, controlling costs, and bolstering environmental and social performance in developing country settings.
