Transforming Middle School Students Assessment Practices through E-Testing

Abstract

Assessment practices in the educational institutions is a part of the educational process and plays a fundamental role in the quality of educational results. In Pakistan, traditional paper-based assessment has been the mainstay of assessing middle school students and it has been criticized for not capturing students' learning potential and the assessment challenges. The adoption of electronic testing or e-testing is not only a revolutionary solution, but also an increasingly popular one across the globe, because of its efficiency, as well as its validity and reliability in evaluating student performance. This is a qualitative study which explores the evolving status of assessment practices of the middle school students in Pakistan using e-testing. The data were collected from the teachers, school administration, students, and education policy makers by using semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis. The findings reveal that although the potential benefits of e-testing are huge (e.g., instant feedback, less bias, adaptive questioning, logistics, etc.), there are infrastructural constraints, digital literacy concerns, socioeconomic biases and traditional education stakeholders that are not inclined towards e-testing. It is also observed that students initially experience anxiety towards the digital assessment format, but become familiar and accept e-testing over traditional assessment format over time. The study ends with some practical suggestions for the gradual implementation of e-testing in the middle school curriculum, which include the necessity of targeted teacher training, investing in digital infrastructure, policy change, and community-level awareness campaigns.
