Abstract

Artificial intelligence is redefining the nature of modern warfare by changing the way military operations are conducted, planned, intelligence is analyzed, and combat engagements are fought, among other areas. This study selected the roles of Artificial Intelligence, Autonomy in Weaponry, and Strategic military transformation for analysis through a qualitative systematic literature review. The study was conducted on a sample of 80 publications, consisting of 55 peer-reviewed scientific articles published in journals, 10 scientific books, and 15 publications issued by international defense and security organizations between 2020 and 2026. Thematic analysis was employed to systematically review the literature and uncover any patterns and developments in AI-powered warfare. The results showed that 92.5% of the papers focused on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance as the major application area of AI in the military, and 91.3% of the papers showed that AI in military command systems can enhance the capability in decision making. The areas of autonomous navigation (86.3% of studies), cybersecurity applications (82.5% of studies), and human–machine teaming (83.8%) were prevalent. The top three challenges identified were ethical accountability (93.8% of publications reviewed), human control of autonomous weapons (91.3%), and legal compliance (90.0%). The results show that AI and cognitive technologies can greatly enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness, strategic capabilities, and mission success, yet also generate significant ethical, legal, and cybersecurity issues. The study concludes that to ensure AI positively contributes to global security while respecting humanitarian values and strategic stability, responsible AI governance, transparent regulatory frameworks, and meaningful human oversight are essential for future military transformation, alongside cooperation at the international level.
